As I've been tweaking my blog header (again), I have come across several pictures of my Oma (German grandmother) who is my inspiration! She was the ultimate Hausfrau (homemaker).
As a child, I spent every summer with her (and my Opa until he passed away in 1986) in Germany. These are some of my favorite childhood memories:
My Oma cooked a hot lunch for us almost every day - because traditionally Germans eat their biggest meals at mid-day. The saying goes: breakfast like a king (hearty breakfasts), lunch like a queen (mid-size meal), and dinner/supper like a pauper (light meal). Because of her, I learned that food could represent LOVE. :) Her food was home-made, cooked-from-scratch - hearty and healthy with fresh vegetables and real butter and the best ingredients.
My Oma had a neat, orderly home. She faithfully washed her windows, cleaned her rugs and floors, and hung her laundry on the line outside (or in the attic when it was raining). Her beds were THE BEST - huge (now called European size) pillows, feather bed comforters, and crisp sheets that she IRONED! Her towels smelled like the wind and sunshine. Because of her, I learned that a warm, soft bed was rest and peace and comfort.
My Oma & Opa scrimped and saved and budgeted all year for my visits, so they could indulge me. To help my parents, they bought my school clothes & shoes (and not just any shoes - they had to be LEATHER!). My Oma often got up early in the morning to get me fresh Broetchen at the local bakery. Very often on one of our outings, my Opa bought me ice cream or a little souvenier. Because of my Oma (and Opa), I learned how to be thankful for provision and gifts.
Although religious Lutherans, my grandparents did not teach me much about God. To them, religion was "private and personal" - one did not discuss it. Because my biological father and my mom were not Christians when they were married, they did not want me christened in the Lutheran church after I was born. This bothered both my grandparents, and after much insistence, they took me to be baptized (IE. "sprinkled") when I was 6 or 7 years old. Though it did not have the same significance as the baptism by immersion I underwent after I personally accepted Christ as my Savior when I was 8 years old, it signified a dedicating me to God as a young child. It did not secure me a place in heaven by any means (nor does my second baptism; only my faith in Jesus can do that!). However, my christening was still an impacting thing in my life. It was an act of tradition and an unspoken faith. Because of my grandparents, traditions gave me a sense of family, and faith became a little more significant.
I am no where near the good Hausfrau my Oma was! I know I will never attain her standards, nor do I even attempt to achieve them. But because of my childhood memories, there are lingering effects that I want to pass on to my own family:
I love when they enjoy a meal I have cooked. I smile when they get excited over the clean, crisp sheets on their beds and sigh as they sink into the MANY pillows we all sleep with (though I draw the line at IRONING SHEETS - no way!!). I love finding a bargain on a pretty dress or some fun t-shirt or an item my children wanted and seeing their delight when they receive my gift. Most of all, because I have a personal, real relationship with Jesus Christ - one that my family is willing to talk about and in fact, wants to share - I love the conversations we have about serving God, about character issues, and about what they are learning from the Bible, at church, and at their Christian school.
As this generation's Hausfrau, I hope to learn better how to give my family some of the same things I was given: good meals, comfort, provision, traditions, and faith.

Wheelin' and Dealin' (probably considered a *VBP!)
*VBP = very boring post.
You all know I'm new to this whole couponing, matching up sales, finding deals thing (I mean, I've always used coupons and looked for sales - but these days I'm SERIOUS about it. My life budget depends on it).
Since I have about zero interest or time (to wash) or space (to store/hang) or well, ok, honestly, zero interest in cloth diapering (and God bless you cloth-diaperers - I am glad we can all get along despite this difference), I am stuck buying diapers. I am thankful to say that as of yet, I have not paid FULL PRICE for any diapers except Target Up & Up brand which run about $6.99 for a package anyway. For the first few months of M's life, we subsisted on almost only gifted diapers! In fact, I had so many, I gave some newborn & size 1 diapers to TWO other expectant moms when M moved into size 2. What a blessing.
So, now, I am always on the lookout for coupons for name-brand diapers though Miss M's bottom is not sensitive, and she does well in any brand or generics - and she doesn't have the BLOW OUTS that her sister had (those up the back, up the front, down the leg blow-outs - kwim??!) ... WELL:
Amazon sells DIAPERS!! Duh. I've been wondering what to do with my ever-accumulating swagbucks next ... and then I saw a post at moneysavingmom.com that gave me the proverbial "lightbulb moment". I just bought 124 diapers for about $.05 a diaper - shipped FREE. They should be arriving on my front porch on Saturday.
Now, I did have to go thru some hoops to do so BUT here's how it went down:
Item(s) Subtotal: $31.97 (that's what the Huggies Supremes - 124 count box is going for right now @ amazon
)
Shipping & Handling: $0.00 FREE - thank you very much "Amazon Mommy" account sign-up benefit & 1 qualifying purchase.
Promotion Applied: -$9.59 I also signed up for their "subscribe & save" program which gave me 30% off my order - I will CANCEL this service tomorrow. The terms clearly state that you may cancel at any time, and hence, I am taking them up on that.
Promotion Applied: -$6.39 20% off diapers at amazon code from PARENTS magazine (which I have a FREE subscription to!!).
Total Before Tax: $15.99
Estimated Tax To Be Collected: $0.00
Gift Certificate/Card Amount: $9.92<--- thank you swagbucks & surveys (I fill out occasional survey via Opinion Place on AOL for a few amazon $$ here & there)
Grand Total: $6.07 divided by 124 diapers = $.048 cents PER DIAPER :)
That seems like a lot of work ... but I actually LIKE doing stuff like this. It's ok. And these 124 diapers should last me a good - oh, say, about - 3 days. ;)
*Actually, M goes through about 5 diapers on a good day so they will actually last me 20-25 days (about 3 weeks).

Looking Forward
Last November, I celebrated "30 Days of Thanks" as I counted down to my last day of working in our church/school's office (which happened ON MY BIRTHDAY) and the month of Thanksgiving.
Several of you joined me - and it was so encouraging to me to have friends sharing their thanksgiving with me & each other.
I plan to do this again for November 2010. I will be celebrating an "XL" birthday on November 30, which I am trying to embrace instead of dread!! [XL are Roman Numerals in case you're wondering.]
I am putting this out there now so you can consider joining me again or for the first time! Consider yourself personally invited!! Save the date: Nov 1, 2010

Fall Photo Shoot
Yesterday was the ideal day for me.
It started out a little cool - but warmed up beautifully by the afternoon.
We didn't leave the house all day except when
Miriam and I took a little spin around the neighborhood - with her stroller.
Then we hung out in the backyard to soak in a little sun.
We have a backyard full of white oak trees.
I can't say I love them because the leaves turn various shades of ugly brown in the fall - and then not all the leaves fall off so the trees look pitifully anemic and tufty all winter - kind of like old men who don't trim their nose and ear hair (!!).
I miss fall in East Tennessee where I grew up - there fall was orange and red and yellow ...
It was brilliant - not dull brown...but anyway...Miriam doesn't know any different.
She likes the ugly brown crackly dead leaves just fine.
Miriam is getting less & less content to just sit still these days.
She thinks she is should be standing up all the time any more!! I guess I have to let her because she is bound & determined to GROW UP!
Miriam is 40 weeks old today!

Happy Homemaker - Monday 9/27
The weather in my neck of the woods:
Yesterday it was like 55 degrees and rainy when I drove to church - which is a little COLD to me after it being like 90 a few days before. I refuse to turn the heater on, but it's a little chilly this morning too! Instead, when Miriam woke up around 7:45 a.m., I cuddled with her in my warm bed while she had her "breakfast".
Things that make me happy:
A second chance at being a SAHM. Even after a long day or a sleepless night, I still think that a bad day at home is better than a good day working full-time.
Book I'm reading:
I'm wading through this book:
It is a secular book but full of fascinating insights on Lincoln's life. He overcame some huge issues, most daunting probably was his own "melancholy" and depression (so severe that he contemplated suicide several times). Currently in the book, Lincoln is about to get married (which he is doing mostly out of duty to Mary Todd because he'd actually been in love with another woman who refused him. An interesting tidbit on Lincoln's view of his marriage: after getting all dressed up for his wedding day, Lincoln encountered a friend who asked him where he was going, and Lincoln replid, "To hell, I suppose." !!).
At this time, Lincoln had completely rejected his religious upbringing of his father's harsh version of the Baptist faith (which was more of a extreme Calvinist bent, "we are chosen-by-God-or-not" kind of faith with no free will to choose our eternal destiny) and was seeing himself as more of a fatalist. He still believed in God, but more that God was up somewhere and people had no control over anything that He did to them. I was talking to Dan about this, and he said one writer he read thinks that Lincoln didn't truly become a Christian until right before Gettyburg when his writings and speeches take on a whole new, spiritual aspect. I guess I had always thought Lincoln was a Christian all his life; but apprently he wasn't a true believer until much later.
What's on my TV today:
currently Rachael Ray.
On the menu for dinner:
my son actually wants Tuna (Helper) Casserole. I'm glad my kids have simple tastes! :)
I am not sure exactly what I'll make, but dinner WILL include bread-machine bread tonight!! Can't wait!
On my To Do List:
make an appointment to get a tune-up/oil chance for my husband's car
laundry & the "usual" around the house stuff
New Recipe I tried or want to try soon:
hmmmmmmmm, not sure yet.
Looking forward to this week:
Friday night! :)
Tips and Tricks:
Trick bag is EMPTY today!
Trick bag is EMPTY today!
No words needed (favorite photo or picture, yours or others you want to share):
Don't have time to go thru my pics right now ...Lesson learned the past few days:
Being grumpy is a waste of time - but it sure feels good to be cranky for a little while as long as you get over yourself quickly!! ;)
On my mind:
wondering if I'm ever going to get ORGANIZED to my own satisfaction. Wondering if one day I will actually be able to sit down & NOT look around and see all the things that are dusty or need a place or need to be given away...and thinking that thankfully in the light of eternity, the state of my house will not matter!!! :)
Devotionals, Scripture Reading, Key Verses:
In my read-thru-the-Bible-at-my-own-pace, I am in II Chronicles finally. The lives of these kings and their people pretty much have a basic pattern: serve God & be blessed OR serve idols & be destroyed. The "good kings" didn't just do good - but they served God with their HEARTS. That is said over & over. It isn't just enough to put on a good show, but it isn't worth anything eternal if it isn't from the heart.
In the New Testament, Jesus said the 2 greatest commandments are: (1) love the Lord with ALL YOUR HEART, soul & mind - and (2) love your neighbors as yourselves. (Matthew 22:35-39)

Weekend Blessings
I know I am blessed. I know I have a good life. Just sometimes I forget. Know what I mean?!
This weekend, I almost forgot ... Dan had to be gone a lot for a choir weekend thing at church on Friday eveing and Saturday, and I missed him so much. Miriam has been extra clingy/fussy lately - perhaps due to her new tooth coming in, perhaps due to the flu shot she got on Thursday, maybe just because she wants to be that way. I don't know, but I haven't gotten much done or much time for myself. It's ok because I'm the mom; that's my job ... but I really just needed a little reprieve in there somewhere.
And Dan did come home without eating with the provided lunch for the choir to be with us on Saturday, which reminded me yet again how blessed I am to have such a good husband who looks out for me.
We had such a blessing come our way yet again on Friday that we were able to enjoy grocery shopping a little more on Saturday afternoon! I was going to pad our "grocery" envelope with the money I made at the recent consignment sale, but GOD provided by another means!! We came into some unexpected cash - and what a blessing that was!! Such a reminder that GOD knows what we need when we need it. We were also hoping Anna could play Upward Basketball this year since she sat out last year ... and the registration fee is now provided as well without us having to juggle our envelope funds to pay it.
(I don't mean the above to sound like we don't have enough money to pay for food and our kids' activities - we do; we just have to keep a tight budget, and we have to be very, very discerning in our choices. It is just a new concept to me the last few years to be THIS serious about budgeting, I'm still figuring it all out. My point in even mentioning this is (1) to give GOD the glory and (2) to remind myself (and maybe you) that God can provide your EVERY need if you trust - and sometimes even if you're NOT trusting!).
I don't know why I doubt so often, why I complain, why I worry. The Bible reminds me that I am God's child ... apparently because I often act like one!

MiMi Speaks: 9 Months!
Welcome to another edition of MiMi Speaks ...
I have now been outside the womb longer than I was inside.
Here's a picture of ME on the inside a year ago (ok, it's a picture of my Mommy - but I was making my presence known!):
Just look at me NOW:
I now weigh 18 lbs and 14 oz. I'm 27 1/2 inches!
[I'm back in the 50th percentile - except my HEAD continues to be off the top of the charts. The doctor even measured Mommy's head and wants the measurement of Daddy's head just for comparison sakes; though as smart as I am, she is SURE I'm just fine.]
I got my finger pricked to check my iron levels (and they are A-okay - hemoglobin level of 11).
The band-aid was pretty fun to play with!!
Though I refuse to crawl, roll around very much, or move too far from one place,
I'm meeting these so-called "milestones of development" for my age.
I can say "da-da" however I still say "ma-ma" more often! Mommy's my FAVORITE - I feel like crying when she leaves the room - well, ok, I do CRY whenever she leaves the room.
I even have 1 and a half teeth (the second is going to pop through any time now!). I have beaten both my siblings on this one - neither of them had any teeth til they were a year old. Ha.
I also have more hair than they both had COMBINED. :)
I can use my fingers as pinchers. I can feed myself my puffs and other yummy foods like cut-up green beans.
I am just about to wave - and I am understanding this concept of clapping (pat-a-cake).
I can click my tongue, and I can blow raspberries. I love it when people click & blow with me!! :)
Some of my other FAVORITES:
Daddy, Andrew, and Anna.
Music, singing, humming.
the cats (which we call "Mietze Katze"-to appease my Oma's desire to teach me SOME German).
applesauce, whole-grain puffs, rice rusk baby mum-mums, and yogurt juice.
mirrors.
board books (they are tasty!)
This is ME enjoying my yogurt juice ... I've gotten smarter than that silly camera my mother is forever sticking in my face. When I hear it turn on (it makes a lovely noise!), I already close my eyes because I know that mean, ol', blinding FLASH is coming.
See, my big head is just full of BRAINS!! :)

Playing TAG!
My bloggy friend Sandra @ Diary of a SAHM tagged me in a fun little meme ... I love these things so I'm tickled to play along.
She has asked me 8 questions, and then I will ask YOU 8 questions. Now, you don't HAVE TO play along - and I'm not going to tag 8 specific people, so if you read this blog entry, just consider yourself TAGGED anyway.
Sandra asks:
1. What is your biggest pet peeve?
Honestly, I have about 10 ... I suppose I have a low tolerance level for certain things ... but since you said BIGGEST, today I would have to go with people who DO NOT fulfill their obligations TIME & TIME AGAIN. I mean, everyone messes up or forgets something once in a while - but some people just consistently blow off appointments, responsibility, and obligations - and their work falls onto the shoulders of those who consistently do the right thing, show up on time, and are willing to take up the slack.
2. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Again, I'd "settle" for about 10 different locations that are WONDERFUL or that I imagine are WONDERFUL... but today, ship me off to the little suburb of Frankfurt, Germany where I spent every summer with my grandparents from age 6 until age 20. A little township where the bank and post office closed each weekday from noon until 2 p.m. for lunch and "rest" - where you got your daily bread from the bakery which always smelled like coffee - where a child could safely ride a bicycle by herself for miles along an idealic river ... and so many precious memeories remain waiting to be re-visited.
3. Have you ever been searched by the cops? (LOL inquiring minds want to know)
Thankfully, I can say NO I HAVE NOT!!! :)
4. What is the one thing on your mind right now?
This is hard to narrow down --- but I'd say my baby girl. Today - for the first time ever - I allowed one of my children to get a flu shot. At Miriam's 9 month old appointment, the pediatrician highly recommended she get it - and I consented. Miriam has been somewhat out of sorts ever since - and even just a little while ago, about an hour after she went to bed, she woke up crying and hot :( I hope the Motrin I gave her kicks in soon and allows us all some restorative rest.
5. Favorite song right now.
It's just an old hymn that has popped up in my life several times lately: It is Well With My Soul. My son played it on the piano for the offertory 2 Wednesday nights ago at our mid-week service at church - and we sang it last night at the service! AND one of my dear friend's blogs happens to be named after this song also.
6. What talent do you wish you had?
Goodness, I wish I had about 700 talents - sometimes I just wish I had ONE talent ... but anyway - the one I wish I had TODAY was the talent to make people feel special. To be one of those encouragers who can make each person they talk to feel like they are the most important person on the planet. To instinctively know what a person needs - and to be able to do it for them with confidence and to have that person feel loved and nurtured because I was there for them.
7. Favorite drink.
A Route 44 diet coke with lime from Sonic!
8. In one word, how would you describe yourself.
REAL.
So, if you want to play along, here's what I want to know about YOU (if you play, please link back to me or leave a comment!!):
1. How old were you when you first wore make-up (please only tell me this if you are female!!LOL)?
2. If you had "one last request" before you died, what would it be?
3. How many times a day do you typically check email, facebook, and/or the internet?
4. What was the last thing you drank?
5. What outfit or piece of clothing could you just LIVE IN all the time?
6. How many sibling do you have - and how many did you want growing up, if any?
7. What was your favorite toy/game as a child?
8. What person do you think probably had the MOST influence in making you who you are today?
Cooking Thursday - EASY Chicken Pot Pie
I'm still learning to cook ... Truth be told, I don't really LOVE to cook although the more I figure out the whole process, the more I enjoy it. Mostly I enjoy the reaction of my family when I place something yummy in front of them. :) It used to be that I really only knew how to cook things like tacos, spaghetti, boxed mix meals, etc. - but over time, I've gathered receipes, tried recipes from blogs, and watched/learned from friends who are great cooks. It's not that my mother failed me - but she is like me and is somewhat of a reluctant cook. My Oma (see pic on my header!) was the ULTIMATE good cook. She actually went to school to learn home economics and cooking (and not that fancy, gourmet cooking - but down-home, basic goodness cooking; it was actually a program in the late 1930s called the League of German Maidens in East Prussia where she lived). She met my Opa (grandfather) because she had a job cooking for soldiers in World War II. He was a hungry engineer, who perhaps fell a little in love with her cooking as much as he fell for her!!?
In any case, I say all that to say, here's a new recipe I tried this week. I have since received a recipe for making pot pie from "scratch" but this is the quick, easy recipe I found on allrecipes.com (with a little tweaking from me).
EASY Chicken Pot Pie:
(2) refridgerated or frozen pie crusts, thawed/ready to bake
about 3 chicken breasts, poached (?) in boiling water, shredded
1 can cream of chicken soup
about 1 cup milk
bag of frozen peas & carrots, cooked a few minutes less then what prescribed to cook completely
a few potatoes (I had some golden ones I didn't need to peel), cubed (I put them in raw; they were just a little undercooked - so next time, I might boil or microwave them slightly before adding)
s & p, seasoning
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prick one of the pie crusts & bake for about 8-10 minutes (to prevent a soggy bottom pie!). In a bowl, mix up chicken, soup, milk, veggies, potatoes. Sprinkle on salt, pepper, and whatever seasoning you prefer (I used poultry seasoning). Pour mixture into pie crust. Cover w/ 2nd crust; pinch at seams. Cut a few slits in top.
Bake 30-35 minutes. You could brush w/ egg white before baking, if you're ambitious. I wasn't. :)
Let cool.
ONE PIE fed my family of 4 with no left-overs (Miriam didn't get any).

Happy Homemaker Monday
The weather in my neck of the woods:
gloriously warm ... sunny ... unusually warm - maybe even up to 90 degrees today!!!
I just realized FALL begins on Wednesday. (Remember, I don't really like fall, which probably makes me totally outnumbered!)gloriously warm ... sunny ... unusually warm - maybe even up to 90 degrees today!!!
Things that make me happy:
the quiet. being home with my baby. my family. blogging.
Book I'm reading:
I'm fixing to dive into Lincoln's Melancholy - based on my husband's recommendation. He recently read the book and said it reminded him A LOT of life with me. He's always called me "Melan-CONNY" - and he says this book (by a phychologist) shows how Lincoln's melancholy was a huge part of what made him great. It was what fueled his ability to be realistic about the political chaos around him ... and so much more. Maybe after I read it, I'll give a review (You can look forward to that VBP*!) *VBP=very boring post.
What's on my TV today:
Lately I've been watching the TODAY & GMA shows ... I kind of like being "in the know" - though much of what there is to know isn't worth knowing ... ??!
On the menu for dinner:
I want something chicken pot-pie-ish for dinner. I've never made one - but I'm going to search allrecipes.com today.
On my To Do List:
oh my, it's always SO LONG. A lot of it is self-inflicted but if I don't get my house organized again SOON, I am going to run away from home. Plus errands like the fact that Missouri requires us to get our vehicles inspected before we get new license tags :( I hate that. I don't like mechanics; I just want to get in my car & DRIVE.
New Recipe I tried or want to try soon:
Hopefully a REALLY GOOD chicken pot pie today.
In the craft basket:
I don't have one - unless you count the laundry basket that has some things to mend in it. I'm a lousy seamstress, but I can sew a button back on & do some minor mending, thanks to Home Ec class in high school!
Looking forward to this week:
Tuesday - going to lunch with some "old" friends!!! The rest of the week I have appointments (for Miriam, etc) each day. Otherwise, just looking forward to the weekend, as usual.
Tips and Tricks:
I have been re-using the containers that M's baby wipes come in. I pull the tops off & they make a handy size catch-all. I have a big basket I keep Miriam's toys in and I have sectioned it out with the containers so I can put her little rattles, soft toys, etc in. I also have one on my kitchen counter (I'm thinking you could cover one w/ pretty paper or contact paper) to put loose items in that I haven't figured out where they should go.
My favorite blog post this week:
I can't keep up - I like SO MANY!!
Blog Hopping (a new discovered blog you would like to share with the readers):
none ....
No words needed (favorite photo or picture, yours or others you want to share):
I love the picture I found of my Oma - see my blog header (thanks, Melanie, for suggesting the blue background - I like it. Still tweeking - but it's getting there).
Lesson learned the past few days:
This morning someone called at 6:30 a.m. called & asked me to do something. I said, "No." I didn't say it meanly, but it just did not fit into my personal agenda to do what they wanted me to. I feel a little guilty for saying "NO" but occasionally, one must JUST SAY NO. I can't do EVERYTHING. Sometimes it's ok to think of yourself or your own family FIRST, right?! My FAMILY is my ministry today.
On my mind:
My husband. We didn't start the morning off well - all beginning with the above said phone call. It started everything off wrong, woke the baby up, etc. :( Blah. I noticed he left some important paperwork on the table ... I'll probably stop by later & drop it off for him - and maybe offer an "olive branch" since I was VERY cranky with him this morning.
Devotionals, Scripture Reading, Key Verses:
Philippians chapter 4 - (and thanks again, Melanie!) :)

The Stats from the Consignment Sale (VBP!)
My first ever consignment sale selling experience is over tonight. I dropped my "stuff" off on Monday. Then there was a pre-sale on Wednesday (54 of my items sold!!); two full days of sales Thursday (14 more items sold!) and Friday (11 more items GONE); and a half-off sale today (25 items sold).
This is mainly for my own records; however, if you are ever interested in consigning your stuff, maybe this will give you an idea of what to expect (although I'm sure it is different for every sale!), or if you've consigned in the past, you can compare.
I tagged about 185 things for this sale. A few ended up getting donated immediately as they were stained or had a small flaw (I was allowed 10 items for their "oops" section as well - they were VERY picky about stains/flaws), and 2 pairs of boys' shoes were too big for the sale (though the one pair I had bought there last year!! We gave these away).
In the end, I offered 176 items for sale. 104 items sold. In the end, the 72 items that did NOT sell were donated to whatever charity the sale staff gives them to.
What I found DID NOT sell well were maternity clothes (NONE of my clothes sold - 17 items) - though I will preface that I have kept all my "nicer" maternity clothes. These were things that didn't fit me or were maybe a little "outdated"; they were also almost all given to me so it's really only fair that I didn't profit off my friends' kindness. (My extra nursing cover up did sell though.)
Also, my son's khaki school uniform pants did NOT sell, nor did his jeans (though they were in good shape, not his "play" jeans).
Some things that sold first were a portable swing (Miriam did NOT like it; it was brand new almost) and a play tent that you can put around a twin bed (I was surprised!). Those were my highest priced items also.
I sold a few books and a brand new (duplicate) lullaby CD and a car seat cover and some misc. things like that.
Other things that sold surprisingly well were my son's dress shirts (and polo shirts too) - almost ALL of them sold! and I had a lot! - and a few pairs of dress pants. My older daughter's dresses all sold as well. It is HARD to find nice "dress clothes" these days, I think. So much of my baby clothes did sell too. I had a fair amount, though I am keeping quite a bit to give to friends who may be having baby girls soon (or just storing it!! Not sure I can let those precious clothes go!!!).
So in the bitter end, I sold $200 worth of "stuff" - but the consignment people take 30% (minus $60!) plus an $8 sign-up fee. So I should be getting a check for about $132. I also invested about $30 for hangers, pins, card stock, and gas. So, I'm gonna say I netted $100 profit. I had hoped for more - but still, that's $100 more than I had yesterday! :) And a lot more ROOM in my closets, under beds, & in the garage where I was storing all this STUFF.
My husband doesn't think it was too worth it - selling $200 worth of stuff and really only getting half of that back. He'd just as soon GIVE everything away ... however, he was willing to let me try this. I do still have so much (and really, the NICEST of my stuff) to give away eventually - baby clothes & maternity clothes. We were SO blessed with gifts and donations from others and bargains from Goodwill/thrift shopping, that I want to pass those along some day.
SO:
Was it worth it? It was worth a try anyway!
Will I ever do it again?! I'm not sure ... ;)

Misc.
1. I changed my blog header. I like where it is headed - but I'm not totally satisfied. Any suggestions?
2. As of Friday evening, 79 of my items have sold at the consignment sale! I'm not really sure how many items I turned in ... but I'm guessing there are still quite a few out there because I have not even reached quite half of the amount I thought I'd originally priced. Saturday is the 1/2 price sale - so I should have a final total by tomorrow night.
3. Miriam has a tooth! She's my earliest teether! Andrew & Anna both did not have teeth until they were a year old.
4. If you want a challenge (and have an hour or so to waste!), try out the Pioneer Woman's Smarty Pants Quiz. Wowza!! I attempted to answer everything - using my handy, dandy swagbucks search engine - although I think I only won about 7 swagbucks for all my efforts!!
5. On Saturday we celebrate 12 years of ANDREW! We've already had a head start today with brownies at lunch at school, dinner at Cracker Barrel tonight (with a gift card someone gave us!!), and a few presents already opened! We are So thankful for our boy. I might have to dedicate a blog entry to him tomorrow, if I have time.
6. It's FRIDAY NIGHT - the beginning of the weekend!!! :)

If My Bathroom Could Talk ...
In my desperate attempt to get my little house back under control, I am pretending that I am moving soon ...
In our previous military life, we moved a lot. Sometimes within 6 months of arriving at a duty station, sometimes in 2 years, once I think we actually lived somewhere for 3 years! We moved 7 times in 12 years. I loved it. I loved new places I'd never been, exploring the territory, and finding a new home to live in even though it was usually just a rental apartment or condo or base housing.
Then our kids grew up, started school, and we decided it was best for us if we remained stable, in one location, and that Dan followed a call into a ministry he'd always wanted to pursue.
So here we are: in the same house for 6 years! In the same state for 9 years! Moving was always a time of cleaning out, re-evaluating what we wanted to keep, and taking only what was important to us. So, I am now going to go through my house, pretending we are moving. I am cleaning out every room the best I can, cleaning it out as if a potential buyer was going to look at it. It is absolutely daunting what 6 years of living accumulates and how hard deep down cleaning really is. But it feels good.
To make things more fun for myself and to motivate myself to start, I thought I'd blog about my progress.
I started in my own bathroom the other day. It's funny that this cleaning out of a bathroom has actually turned into a walk down Memory Lane!
This is how my linen closet looked when we first moved into this house. I love how many linen closets this house has - 3! Sadly, they are all now FULL to capacity.
I didn't share that because I want anyone to feel sorry for me or to commend me for all I've given up to live in the middle-of-no-where, Missouri to do what we do now. It is just a statement of fact. I enjoy my life now - as Dan often says, "These are the best days of our lives." Our kids are growing up happy and in a great school and with a wonderful church, surrounded by friends - some of whom they will remember as having been there with them from their earliest memories. It is worth it.
I am thankful for the memories of our Army days, the opportunities we were afforded - but in the light of eternity, what we are doing NOW and where we are NOW matter so much more! :)
I'm not sure when I will tackle my bedroom or the rest of the house. It's a lot of work - and for me, it is more than just cleaning house. It is a cleaning out of my mind and soul and memories. Thank you for sharing them with me.

So much STUFF ..
So much MORE stuff. I came across towels that I got for our wedding - almost 18 years ago!
I came across the hot rollers that I faithfully rolled my hair up in every day of high school, I think!
The rollers still work.
I also once had a perm and used the diffuser to dry my hair ... that was early 1990's!
Can you tell what the above brown case that I found is??!
It is an eye glasses case. It is my Oma's eye glass case! My Oma died in 1990; I really don't know WHY I have her case, but I do. The cleaning cloth has the address of her optometrist on it - in Frankfurt, Germany!
The little slip of paper is a phone number, written in my Oma's precious handwriting.
Deep in the recesses of my bathroom cabinets were these things: a travel iron, an electrical outlet adapter kit, and a foreign travel outlet adapter (still in its package).
We used to travel. a lot. All over Europe, all over the Western U.S., all over the Eastern U.S. because of all the places we were stationed with the Army.
We used to buy souvenirs like this olive oil & honey soap that I got in Sani, Greece that I came across!
I found these sea-sickness bands that I used while on a cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to the Bahamas.
(They didn't help!! Granted I was 6 months pregnant with Anna on that cruise!)
It was a lot of fun to travel, experience new places, and move a lot - courtesy of the U.S. Army; however, I found the one thing that now represents that life:
This is Dan's travel kit ... I found it stuffed way back under the sink of the bathroom. It is all dusty and moldy.
I threw it away.
I didn't share that because I want anyone to feel sorry for me or to commend me for all I've given up to live in the middle-of-no-where, Missouri to do what we do now. It is just a statement of fact. Charming!
The letter of my day today was C. I like the letter C. Perhaps because my name begins with C. I have a great black purse with a huge white C on it ... sadly, those initial purses are kind of out of style right now. Speaking of STYLE and STUFF and the letter C, here is how my day Commenced:
This afternoon I was able to get into my Car without my Cids (oh, wait, that would be Kids ... but anyway ...) and Coast with my Cruise Control to another City to a Consignment Center. After I Checked in, I had to Conduct my Clothes (and other stuff) inside the Complex where the sale was Contained. I Concluded that the entire proCess to be a Consignor Consisted of two Complete hours of work for me from start to Conclusion.
Afterwards, I felt I needed to be Congratulated, so I took myself to the nearest Chick-Fil-A!! Afterwards, I met Charming Charlie!!!! Several of my Compadres Consistently Commended Charlie's to me ... and so I had to Check it out for myself. I was Completely Content to Contemplate the Countless Cute Couture! Conversely, I had not much Cash to Conduct much business with ... but I was able to Contract some necklaces from the Clearance Collection!
Cool! :)

Home.
It was a splendid day! Fall is NOT in the air yet (thankfully - we can talk/debate later about why I don't like fall - yes, you can *gasp*), but right now I want to dwell on this NOT-fall day. The temp was just about perfect - hovering maybe around 80 degrees, which compelled me & Miss Mia-Mia (my new compromise nickname since Dan does NOT like MiMi, though I will continue to slip up & use it, no doubt!) to get outdoors!
As I walked around my neighborhood, I perused the many houses for sale. On my own street right now, there are 2 houses for sale - one with 5 bedrooms and an above ground pool on its FLAT lot (a bane to our existence is the hill our house is on!) ... I told Dan we needed to move across the street, but he isn't budging, which is probably good since I don't even want to know what a mortgage payment for that other house is!! I day-dreamed about what the other houses for sale on other streets were like on the inside. Some had basements - I want a basement!! Some surely had a bonus room - I'd LOVE to have a bonus/play room. Some had sun rooms - even that extra space might help!! Most had more than 3 bedrooms - and extra bedroom would be nice these days!! But as I became more disgruntled with the thoughts of the cramped quarters that are my house, I started back down my street towards it ... and saw a beautiful sight: HOME. My home. And I was suddenly content.
And Dan is even weeding through books!! I am allowed to get rid of these (at a paperback swap place).
Granted this will only lead to credit at the bookstore, which will lead to Dan eventually getting MORE books - but for now, I am happy to be rid of this extra clutter. One woman's clutter is another man's books?! :)

I must say that the blue blue sky today and the way the sun made the grass & trees seem green green today sure helped! :)
And as for the cramped quarters, I'm working on that!!
This is what my trunk looked like as I filled it with my consignment sale items to take away today - nice & full:
I had 1 1/2 portable garment racks full of clothes to wheel into the metroplex where the sale was being held!
Plus all the misc other things I brought along:

Best Case - Worst Case (*VBP!)
WARNING: Potential *very boring post
We've had a super busy, overly filled weekend from an overnight at my in-laws to a full day of church activities today (me sub'bing in Sunday School, Dan teaching Children's Church, me having afternoon nursery duty, and Dan having an additional choir practice!). Miriam is so off schedule from the upheaval that I'm just PRAYING she sleeps well tonight because she DID NOT sleep good at all at my in-laws, and her naps got messed up with me having to wake her to get to afternoon church today. I'm ready for my nice, slow, BORING routine to begin again!!
Tonight I finished up the things I am going to consign tomorrow for a huge sale in a near-by city. This is the first time I've attempted something like this ... and I hope I haven't wasted my time. Here's how my investment/profit margain is looking:
INITIAL INVESTMENT:
$8.00 fee to consign/register
$7.00 for hangers
$1.00 for safety pins
$1.00 for card stock to make pricing tags
$17 TOTAL
The other consideration is time & money. I will have to drive 160 miles round trip to drop off my stuff tomorrow, which is about $20 (?) worth of gas. So my investment goes up to: $37
I tagged $370 worth of clothes & "stuff" (mostly Andrew & Anna's outgrown clothes that I have been storing since FOREVER!! and a few maternity clothes & some of Miriam's clothes, though I plan to give most of hers away if 2 expectant mother friends have girls!). I only get 70% of what I sell, so my biggest, best-case-scenario profit could be about $259 - $37 initial cost = $222.
HOWEVER, the clothes that don't sell by Saturday will be discounted (per my agreement) to 1/2 off, which could drastically lower my profit... In the end, is it really worth my time & effort? Could I, should I have just donated my stuff to Goodwill or had a yard sale? I don't know. Is slowly getting my closets & garage cleaned out worth all this? Probably!! Even if I just make $50 or $100 it would at least cover my upcoming hair appointment to FINALLY color my grays away again without me having to dip into my very meager cash envelopes ... so yeh, I'd say it will be worth it to have a lengthy "therapy session" with my favorite hair stylist! :)
Does anyone out there have any experience with consignment sales? I've been VERY successful in BUYING at them (last September, I went to this very same sale & got a few things for Miriam before she was born!!) - but this is my first go at being a consignor. Say a prayer that my stuff SELLS!!!!

Cooking Thursday - Meatloaf
Lately, I've been digging out old recipes ... and I found another YUMMY Cooking Light recipe from long ago (as in before I even had kids).
I like meatloaf; I know not everyone does. I even order it at Cracker Barrel occasionally even though the menu holds more exciting entrees. But THIS RECIPE is THE BEST meatloaf I have EVER had!
Mama's Meatloaf
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped green bell pepper (optional, IMO)
3 Tbsp minced parsley
1 tsp pepper
3/4 tsp salt
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 slice white bread, torn into small pieces (I wet mine first)
1 1/2 lb ground beef
veg. cooking spray
1/3 c. ketchup
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine the first 8 ingredients in a large bowl, tossing to moisten bread. Crumble meat over onion mixture and stir until just blended. Pack mixture into a 9x15 inch loaf pan coated by cooking spray. Spread ketchup over the top of loaf. Bake at 350 for 1 hour or until meat loaf registers 160 degrees. Let loaf stand in pan 10 minutes.
Remove loaf from pan; cut into 6 slices.

Command Center for Baby
A couple at church gave us this exersaucer which was BRAND NEW!!
They had purchased it for their grandson - not realizing that a mobile 15 month old probably would NOT like an exersaucer...and hence, it was passed on to Miriam instead - and we in turn will pass it on to our church's nursery when we are done with it.

Labor Day
Tomorrow is a holiday - Labor Day. Hope you all get a "day off" - though sometimes Labor Day ends up being a day of LABOR (at least for ME). Right now I am determined to consign some of my kids' outgrown clothes that have been accumulating for YEARS (well, for at least 2-3 years based on the sizes of clothes I am finding stacked in my garage!!).
This is the mess I am sorting through tonight. You can't even begin to fathom the messy-ness of it all. Clothes to consign, clothes to donate, clothes to give away...
How do YOU deal with outgrown kids' clothes?? Get rid of them right away? Donate? Box them up? Sort and store??!
Same with all these books (above)... I'm attempting to sell some of them on amazon and other places. Otherwise, they WILL be given to Goodwill. We are overrun by books at our house. While books are TERRIFIC - if I wanted to live among stacks of books, I'd move into a library.
Lastly, above is my new OFFICE CHAIR!! (and our cat Ella, who finds perching on top of the box akin to something Snoopy feels when he is playing a vulture perching on top of a cliff!!)
Despite all these plans to labor on Labor Day, right now, this very minute is my absolute FAVORITE part of this holiday weekend. It is Sunday night, after midnight. I'm about to go to bed. Everyone else has been sleeping for quite a while.
My husband invited me to watch a movie with him tonight, but by the time I got Miriam to bed, he was fast asleep on the couch by 8:45 p.m. He's still there.
So, no movie for me - but I'm ok with that. I know Dan will get up early tomorrow morning, possibly make breakfast. He'll listen for Miriam and after I feed her, he'll play with her a while and get her ready for the day.
Then he said he'd take the kids off to browse a grocery store or thrift shop - and I'll have a few hours of more BLISSFUL quiet time, alone at home.
Right now, this very minute, I can still anticipate all that - and it makes me SO happy :)
Then on Tuesday we'll delve back into our routines where no one is pampered and everyone has schedules and to-do's and obligations and responsibilties. And reality will settle back in - but the memory of the restful holiday morning will (hopefully) linger just a little while!

Shopping (VBP)
I'm going to start labeling my rambling posts as VBP to give everyone a "head's up" that this post will be a Very Boring Post. :) So ...
I'm still working on figuring out this whole budget, saving money, couponing, deciding what we really need, what to splurge on, and what to put back...without feeling like I'm totally depraved and denied of any fun in shopping. I don't want this budget thing to control my life and make me CRAZY, although we are definitely committed to shopping wiser these days.
For example, I found a cute, modest dress in Anna's size a while back ... for $10. I put it back thinking it was "too expensive". After thinking about it, I thought TEN DOLLARS for a nice dress - that is great!! Once upon a time, I would have thought a $25 dress for Anna was a bargain. Anyway, I bought that dress ... and am glad I did! Since then I've seen some CUTE dresses for $10-12 but I've put them back & left them there because she didn't NEED them now.
Today we did some shopping - for fun. We went to near-by outlet malls and Target and a different grocery story than we usually shop at, Hy-Vee. My husband grew up with Hy-Vee in Iowa; that's where he had his first job - and was offered a manager job though he decided to go to college and the Army instead. Sometimes I think he misses those grocery store days!!
We were pleasantly surprised at the prices at Hy-Vee today!! And some of the sales matched my coupons! This next part is boring but I'm writing it mainly for my own records:
Hy-Vee sale: Oscar Mayer (no nitrate) hotdogs - 4 packs for $5 (-) my coupon for $1.50 off 2 O/M hotdogs (sadly, I only had one coupon) = $1.00 each pack
Hy-Vee sale: Kraft shredded cheese - 2 for $4 (x4 pkgs) + $1.38 for Philadelphia Cream Cheese (-) my coupon for $5 off 5 Kraft cheese products = $4.40 for everything listed here
Hy-Vee sale: Pepsi products - buy 4, get one free on 12-packs. ALSO they were on sale for 4 12-packs for $12. So we got 5 12-packs of Pepsi variety for $2.40 a pack (that's 20 cents a can). Do we NEED these ... well, some days I DO!!!!!! :)
Otherwise, Target had some clearance summer clothes for babies. I got Miriam 3 18-month pieces for $2.80 each, as well as 2 winter long-sleeved shirts for $3.50 each. So, I spent about $15 on my baby girl. Necesary? I don't know. Cute? Absolutely!!!!!
Also, Target (Up & Up) diapers are INEXPENSIVE!!!! Without coupons. $6.16 for 36 diapers. I've beat that with a great Kroger sale and coupons ONCE and only ONCE getting 36 brand name diapers for $5.50 each pkg.
The only dilemma I have with all this "saving" I did today is that it is only the beginning of my month and my money envelopes are already sadly depleted. Not empty, but just far less money in there than I'm comfortable with. But the good news is that I *know* for a fact that God will continue to provide. :)

Cooking Thursday: Fajitas!
I've had a GREAT week ... the kind of week I like - none of my plans have been unexpectedly interrupted!! God's been gracious to me and let me have a week that has been all my own! I am SO grateful - and have been quite productive! :)
Today I'm even able to participate in COOKING THURSDAY!
I love this recipe I'm about to share. I've used it for over 10 years (more so a long time ago because it involves flank steak, which we don't buy much any more - but today it is in the budget to buy some!)
Sizzling Steak Fajitas
(and I want to say this recipe is even from COOKING LIGHT magazine so it's even good for you - well, if you don't add a bunch of sour cream!)
3/4 lb lean flank steak
2 tsp cumin
2 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp black pepper
1/8 tsp ground red pepper
4 8-inch flour tortillas
1 tsp vegetable oil
2 c. sliced onion
1/3 c. green pepper strips
1/3 c. red pepper strips
1/3 c. yellow pepper strips
1 Tbsp lime juice
1/4 c. sour cream
Slice the flank steak diagonally across the grain into thin strips.
Combine steak with the next 6 ingredients in a zip top bag; seal & shake well to coat.
Heat tortillas according to pkg directions.
Heat 1 tsp oil in a large, non-stick skillet over med-high heat.
Add steak and onions and peppers;
saute' for about 6 minutes or til steak is done.
Remove from heat; stir in lime juice.
Divide mixture evenly among the 4 tortillas & roll up.
Serve w/ sour cream.
Garnish w/ salsa and/or cilantro sprigs.

Peek A Boo!
BOO! It's us ... me & Miss MiMi just passing through to say HI!!!
We've been kind of busy this week! And yet, it's been a GREAT week ... so far.
We've been kind of busy this week! And yet, it's been a GREAT week ... so far.
On Tuesday, Miriam had a little improvised photo session with a friend who is a budding photographer. She has a really nice camera & took some fun shots of Miriam (and me).
This one cracks me up!! I don't think any of my other 2 babies ever chewed on their toes! Now we have something to tease Miss MiMi about when she gets older. ;)
Well, sometimes you have to stop and take time to smell the --- ahhh - well, the weeds! (because that's what mainly grows in my backyard ... that and rocks!)
Thankfully, Miriam laughs at all my jokes (mind you, she doesn't understand English quite yet!)
Actually, Miriam will laugh at just about anything these days!
She does have her serious side though ...
contemplating life, the universe ... when's the next feeding?
OH MY!
Look at the time ... we MUST get some sleep!!
GOOD NIGHT!
