Developmentally Challenging

Miriam LOVES her new bumbo seat!!I first saw the bumbo seat when my nephew had one about 4 years ago (he just turned 4 on February 27th - Happy Birthday, Ethan!). I thought this contraption was pretty neat - kind of looked like a potty chair though! :) But I never thought I'd need one. In fact, when I was registering for my baby shower, I kind of checked out the bumbo seats at Target, but I didn't put it on the registry because I thought it might be a little superfluous - and a little expensive for a piece of foam-y stuff. I mean, what's wrong with the standard bouncy seat and baby swing!?

HOWEVER, Miriam has decided she doesn't really want to lay back - she wants to SIT UP. And this bumbo seat is the PERFECT thing for her to safely do that on her own. I found one on ebay for a VERY VERY reasonable price - even with shipping - and it happened to be lilac, which is a lovely color at that (there are some UGLY green and yellowy bumbos on ebay selling for way more ). The bumbo is actually recommended for babies who are 3+ months old - Miriam is just 2 months ... but ya know, she's waaaaaaay ahead developmentally. :)

Speaking of development, at Miriam's 2 month check up, the doctor asked me if Miriam had "tummy time". While I know about it - even back when A & A were babies, the doctors were advocating "tummy time" - I had severely neglected Miriam's "tummy time". I hope she'll still be a functioning, able-bodied member of society despite my neglect (ha!!).

SO, this morning we had TUMMY TIME. I even have this nifty mat that someone gave to me as a hand-me-down. We had at least 10-15 minutes of tummy time, which will hopefully help make up for last month's neglect of this activity if we keep it up! :)
This tummy time stuff is a little exhausting ...
After tummy time, it was time to get dressed & spend a few minutes in the bumbo.

I LOVE the mouse feet. So many of Miriam's outfits - especially those from Carter's - have the cutest little feet: ballerina shoes, the whole foot as a kitty cat, or little animals on the bottom of the feet - so sweet!! :)

On a side note, do you see that basket beside M in the above pic? That was the BEST thing I registered for & received at my baby shower!!!! I don't have a changing table (no room for one!), so this is my diaper caddy - plus I have my other things I need in there - diaper rash cream, baby lotion, clippers, mylicon drops, etc ... and I can carry it easily from room to room - plus it is pretty to boot! :) I am so thankful someone gave it to me!!

Bumbo? Where do they find those names? Great idea for a little girl who wants to see what's happenin'.

I just love the pictures and am thankful you take the time to share with us. My how she has grown over the past couple months.

One of the ladies in our church just had a little boy and I got to hold him yesterday. Mmmm the sweet smell of a little baby. It's been quite some time since my own were that little.

Hope you have a good day!!!

The Bumbo is not meant to be used for prolonged periods.
Babies by nature do not want to be in one position for a long time....they want to be on the move all the time.
The time limit for being in the Bumbo?
Well, as long as it takes to feed baby and long enough for baby’s food to settle from the chest to the stomach.
Upright posturing facilitates an improved visual field of the environment, improved respirations and breath control, assists a baby who needs to be upright after feedings due to reflux and many other benefits.
When baby shows signs of irritation or starts to cry, take baby out immediately. Baby should then be put on a vertical plane on its side, back or stomach for a while, or held by mom for a short while. As the baby cannot talk it would probably need the comforting and reassuring touch of the mother for a while. The Bumbo should not be used for mothers to imprison baby but rather to stabilize the child into hip flexion, where Bumbo places the pelvis in a slight anterior pelvic tilt which facilitates lumbar extension. This action, combined with the natural curve of the rib cage, facilitates the baby around the lower ribs and trunk stabilization. In essence the Bumbo is a device for baby to practice head and postural trunk control and allows the child the pelvic stability needed to get the hands into midline for play. You cannot practice for too long. The duration of this exercise should be entirely at the mother’s discretion. Depending on the age of the child younger babies who have just started to keep their heads upright should not be kept in the Bumbo for longer than 15 minute intervals. As they grow older and depending on the physical development they can stay in the Bumbo for longer periods and all the time never being left alone.
The bumbo is purely a device for keeping baby in an upright position so mother can make use of both her hands. visit: http://www.bumbo.co.za
